Borders Group of Advanced Motorcyclists (BGAM) For our current chat join us on Facebook.

Welcome to BGAM 2012 !

This is going to be our best year ever. We are going to communicate with our membership like never before and with our largest ever IAM Qualified Observer Team in place, right at the start of the 2012 riding season, we are perfectly placed to offer our IAM Associates the very best of our attention.

At the AGM we saw Glen step down from the increasingly demanding role of Chairman. Glen has taken BGAM from a standing start six years ago, to its envious position within the IAM groups hierarchy that we have reached today. This has been a hard task and Glen has kept his nose to the grindstone through thick and thin. His unstinting efforts must be commended. In his absence at the AGM, the committee and membership gave him a huge round of applause for all his efforts.
Well done and thank you Glen.

Luckily for me, Glen has been retained in the Committee as the BGAM Group Secretary and he will be my vital right-hand man in the months to come.

We also said good bye at the AGM, to both Colin and Ty as our long-standing, faithful Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Once again however, they are remaining on the BGAM Committee, which is great news for the Group.
Thank you guys!

BGAM will continue to ride onwards and upwards. That is the direction we aimed for from the first days of BGAM and our navigation so far has been accurate and safe. We have embraced new technology as it has evolved and we use it now for instance, to communicate with our membership.

Our riding season is about to commence on the 1st of April and we will meet at 09:15hrs at MacDonald's in the Wilderhaugh in Galashiels that Sunday for the inaugural run of 2012. Please do feel welcome to come along and meet up with us and join in with our ride-out.

I hope to see you there!

Adding Links, Are your favourates there???

Two Start venues for 2012.

McDonald's Galashiels.  for 9:15 am

or Tesco Eskbank Dalkeith. for 10:30 am

Who are we? what do we do? and why you should come join us.

Who Are We?
BGAM are the local group affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) for the Scottish Borders area. Although BGAM are affiliated to the IAM, we are a separate organisation (as are the other IAM groups). There is also a separate local BORDERS IAM car group.

Our main aim is to:

‘Improve road safety and awareness through developing an individual's
motorcycling skills and to prepare them for the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test’

How Much Does it Cost?
Apart from your own expenses, such as fuel, the total cost is £139* for the full IAM Skill for Life programme via BGAM - excellent value for money!

We do however ask associates for a £30.00 contribution towards Observer expenses.

How Long Will it Take?
The course of observed runs usually lasts for around 10 weeks, at approximately 2½hrs per session. This is just a guide and some Associates may require more or less runs to achieve test standard.

What Happens on Observed Runs?
An Observer will provide feedback and guidance on your observed rides, which will help you prepare for the Advanced Test. The Observer will explain, discuss and, if necessary, demonstrate each aspect of the advance riding techniques.

However, you must go out and practice between each session and study the associated theory to get the full benefit. The old adage of ‘you only get out what you put in’ certainly holds true for advanced riding.

Where and When Do You Meet?
As BGAM Observers are all volunteers and many have day jobs, we normally meet on
Sunday mornings at;
McDonald's, Wilderhaugh, Galashiels TD1 1PW.  At 9:15am.
or Tesco, Eskbank, Dalkeith EH22 3PP. At 10:30am.

The normal observed guidance ‘season’ for BGAM is between March and September. This is mainly due to the lack of daylight, bad weather, the ‘Wintering’ of some people’s motorcycles and that Observers want some of their Sundays back for a long lie in!

However, we do have a limited number of Observers who can take Associates on other days or times.

How Do You Join?

The easiest method to join as an Associate Member is by:

• Firstly join the IAM – either via their website, www.iam.org.uk, or by using their paper application form (available on request from BGAM or the IAM).

What Else Happens in BGAM?
We have many other items on the go throughout the year such as Group Runs, First Aid Courses, Bikesafe and other social activities.
